Interview with Mike Shoti

Artist Mike Shoti discusses “The Bad Guy” album.

How long have you been doing music?

Mike: I’ve Been doing music since 1998 ,so that would be 22 Years.

What inspired you to do this type of particular album?

Mike: I haven’t made music since 2010. I met my wife and had kids, which has been taking up most of my time this last decade. Due to Covid, I had some time on my hands this year. My boy who produced the Album (HustleMusicGroup) was pressing me to do a project with him, so it just made sense to try. I’ve been living the dad life for the last 10 years, so if I was going to do an album, it needed to be conceptual and art-based. I’m a huge fan of the bad guys in movies. I figured that would be a dope theme to build off of.

What motivates you to get in that creative writing process?

Mike: To be honest, the resurgence of that 90’s era golden age sound is what inspired me to give it a try again. Artists like Roc Marci, Stove God Cooks, Griselda, and RJ Payne, and my brother Jamaar Milton have been my inspirations for doing music again.

If you were able to collaborate with any of the other artists, who would it be and why?

Mike: RIP Prodigy of Mobb Deep would have been my dream collabo, but as far as artists today, I would say any of the Griselda artists like Conway The Machine. The type of sound they deliver is the sound I grew up on–dark melodies with grimy hard drums topped with hard flows.

What would you like your fans to know about you?

Mike: I would like them to know that I was truly humbled by this process. I didn’t do this album to become a famous rapper. I just wanted to inspire creativity like I was inspired. Also, I recorded this entire album off the top of my head with no pen.

What type of message would you send to these young artists that are out today?

Mike: I would tell them to keep evolving with their craft and even if you’re on top, treat it like you’re at the bottom. I would also tell them to leave the streets alone cause the streets don’t love you.

“The Bad Guy” is on all streaming platforms.
