Check out the interview below.

Tell us about your career as a personal media coach.

Dr. Lisbon: I recently got into the media coaching business after I saw many individuals keep asking me how I was being featured in so many magazines, podcasts, TV series, and national newspaper articles. When I shared with them what I did and how I was able to secure all of my opportunities, one of my connections asked me if I had ever thought about doing media coaching as I do it so well. After toiling with the idea for almost a year, I finally decided to take it seriously in 2023. Not only have I increased my brand visibility using media, but I’m also securing newer opportunities for my clients to show up and show out in the marketplace.

What type of content do you create?

Dr. Lisbon: Most of my content is centered on positive imagery and inspiring individuals to be their authentic selves. I’m a psychologist by trade, so I understand the power of mindset and how our belief systems about self can enhance or diminish our true identities. By creating content that shows individuals that it is okay to be who they are— which includes not seeking permission or validation from others, is all that’s needed for them to be who they were divinely created to be. I live by the motto I coined “You are the original. Never be someone else’s carbon copy.”

What are some of the biggest highlights of your career?

Dr. Lisbon: Truthfully, the biggest highlight thus far is seeing my clients show up on various media platforms in this season. Most of my clients have always been the individuals who work in background, promoting others to be their best in their respective industries. I told my clients that in 2023, we are changing the narratives and will be front and center by any means necessary. Truly, it’s really seeing individuals step out on faith, believing that they were made for the media, and seeking out opportunities to make it happen. This has been the biggest highlight since pivoting this year.

Tell us about your show “Own Your Ish.”

Dr. Lisbon: “Own Your Ish with Doc April” is a platform designed to help individuals like you and I, share our stories boldly and unapologetically. The goal of each episode is that as we share our truths that we not only continue in our own healing journeys, but also change the narrative of other people’s lives one story at a time. There’s a lot of laughter, deep thinking, and raw conversations that happen both on and off the air that reminds me daily that I’m in my zone of genius as a creator and thought leader.

What can the audience take away from the show?

Dr. Lisbon: The greatest take away for our audience from the show is that it is okay to live in their authentic truths without fear. We’ve all made mistakes throughout this journey we call life. However, it’s not the mistakes that define who we are, but the paths we choose to take after making them. We only have one life to live, so live it boldly and with as much happiness as possible.

How did you get to where you are today?

Dr. Lisbon: I’m known as the pivot queen in the entrepreneurial space. However, I am where I am today because I stopped creating a business around my son’s life story and one that was truly reflective of the woman I was purposed to be. I have a child who is autistic and most of my business was centered on him. However, once he told me that he no longer wanted me to be his advocate and wanted to do it himself, I was hurt initially, but realized that we both needed growth to be who the Most High called us to be. From that day forward, I was determined to find out who April was and what April was called to do in the world. Hence the journey to being a personal media coach was birthed.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to become an entrepreneur?

Dr. Lisbon: I would say buckle up for the ride as this is a marathon and not a sprint. There are a lot of highs and lows that come with being an entrepreneur. A lot of disappointments and questions as to whether or not you’re created to be in this space. The answer is “yes”, but you have to believe in you even when everything around you is saying no. Be comfortable with the pivots. Be comfortable with the no’s. Each component is designed to position you to push in deeper to find out who you are, who you serve, and why they need you now more than ever.

What’s up next for you?

Dr.  Lisbon: Wow! There’s a lot that will be happening for me both personally and professionally. However, my main goals are to finally launch my podcast geared towards women’s empowerment as well as opening up myself to opportunities for corporate training. Personally, my oldest will be graduating from high school, which we are so happy about. I’m also looking for new clients who are ready to use media to increase their brand visibility. So, yes, that’s it for now, but I’m sure I’ll find something else to get my hands into.
