“Judge Has It Out For Me”: Man Violently Attacked Judge During Sentencing Hearing

In video footage, Deobra Delone Redden, a 30-year-old defendant, was captured assaulting a Nevada judge during a sentencing hearing related to a recent battery charge. Redden is slated to return to court to face additional charges, and currently, he is detained without bond at Clark County Jail.

During the hearing, Redden said the following to Judge Mary Kay Holthus, “I’m a person who will never stop trying to do the right thing, no matter how hard it is.” Holthus responded with “I appreciate that, but I think it’s time that you get a taste of something else because I just can’t with that history.”

Holthus decided to deny his probation request and sentence him to prison. At a moment’s notice, the three-time felon jumped over the bench and attacked her. Several people jumped in to fight off Redden before he was hurled to the floor. It’s alleged that during the attack, Redden pulled the judge’s hair, struck her in the head, and slammed her head against the wall.

A corrections officer was also punched and law clerk, Michael Lasso, suffered from several cuts on his hand. Following the attack, Redden shared with a marshal that the “judge has it out for me” and “judge is evil,” according to a declaration of arrest report. He even admitted to corrections officers that he was having a bad day and tried to kill her.

Holthus suffered minor injuries and was treated in the justice center. However, due to her continued pain, a family member took her to the hospital later on. As of Thursday, Redden faces the following new charges:

  • Extortion
  • Intimidate public officers/others, with the use of force
  • Coercion w/force or threat of force
  • Disregard for the safety of a person/property
  • Unlawful act to excrete/fluid by a prisoner in a confined area
  • Battery by prisoner, probationer, or parolee
