Iconic Actress Cicely Tyson Passes Away at 96

Award-winning icon, Cicely Tyson passed away Thursday at the age of 96. As a distinguished actress, Tyson has been in films such as “Odds Against Tomorrow”, “The Last Angry Man”, “The Comedians”, and “A Man Called Adam.” The Oscar winner starred in “Sounder” and “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.

She also scored five Emmy nominations for her role on “How to Get Away with Murder.”

According to Variety.com, “Throughout her career, Tyson refused to play drug addicts, prostitutes, or maids, roles she thought demeaning to black women. But when a good part came along, she grabbed hold of it with tenacity.”

Larry Thompson, who is Tyson’s manager, confirmed the news of her passing, but no further details were provided. According to Deadline.com, Thompson stated, “I have managed Miss Tyson’s career for over 40 years, and each year was a privilege and blessing. Cicely thought of her new memoir as a Christmas tree decorated with all the ornaments of her personal and professional life. Today she placed the last ornament, a star, on top of the tree.”
