Tell us about your new album Journey To Love debuted on Itunes top 100 R& B albums at #3.

I had put a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and money into this project so it was humbling and invigorating to wake up to my album debuting at # 3 with names like Donny Hathaway, John Legend, Toni Braxton, Aretha Franklin, and Mariah Carey. It’s my journal set to music, it’s highly personal and relatable, which is why I think that the feedback I have received thus far has been so positive. It is by no means a major display of my vocal ability or range but more so my musical and lyrical styling. I was super nervous to release this music because of the aforementioned but also excited because it was like showing my baby to the world. This was years in fruition, gestation, and finally manifestation.

What was your inspiration for the album?

I wrote most of these songs years ago. I had endured a traumatic relationship which was my technical first encounter with a long- term relationship and what I thought love was or an idea of what it could or should be. I had, for so long been on the losing end of love interests and relegated myself as being the eternal “friend zone” kind of guy. People generally were attracted to me enough to engage sexually or friendship wise but never anything else. So the first person that came and showed some genuine interest, I obviously jumped on in awe and somewhat disbelief. So appropriately I entitled it Journey to Love. My album takes the listener through the phases of dating and wondering if it could get serious at all, to feeling mutual interest and deeper feelings, to getting together and realizing things were much more complicated than the movies, books, and media outlets tended to show. It moves into heartbreak and break-up, battling the feelings of loneliness and the coping and compensating of such unhealthy actions until self-reflection, reconciliation and healing occur and then a grand revelation which is, We get to choose our own joy no matter what we encounter and with whom.

Journey of Love is truly captivating. Take us through your journey.

My album takes the listener through my journey of dating and wondering if things could get serious at all, to feeling mutual interest and deeper feelings that seemed foreign and so unfamiliar. It moves on into finally getting together and realizing things were much more complicated than the movies, books, and media outlets tended to show and romanticize what Love encompassed. It then moves into heartbreak and break up and battling the notion of breaking back into an individual again after having been a coupled unit for so long and right into battling with the feelings of loneliness as well as the coping and compensating of such, with unhealthy actions. Towards the end of the journey, you see the self-reflection, reconciliation and healing that occurred and then a grand revelation which is, I (we) get to choose my own joy no matter what I encounter and with whom.

Share your music style.

My musical style will always be laid back and in the moment. I tend to not overthink how I want to sing, I just stay in the moment, let go and let God so to speak. You will hear elements of classical choral singing, jazz, blues, gospel, and soul. These greatly shape my musical stylings. I was the kid who rewound a part over and over again because of the lyric or a vocal riff/run or high/low note that impressed me. So I always paid attention to odd things others usually took for granted in the song. I loved background parts and harmonies, and so I paid close attention to that on my own project and even in my live performances.

How has Opera, Jazz standards, and Broadway influenced your music?

Opera taught me to check in with my body and my mind while singing. There’s a technical element to singing correctly that requires you to take note of your body and how it feels when you are singing. Jazz taught me improvisation and utilizing different aspects of my voice. Broadway tunes taught me how to sing to the back of the room, with or without being mic’d, and the importance of emoting to the lyrics and melody as you are creating a mood/vibe.

You work with Rapper Lyteral on Laugh and Let Me Know. Tell us about this collaboration.

Laugh, I wrote from a perspective in which I realize the strength of choosing joy and laughter in the face of adversity. I know many don’t really think this way or probably think it possible but this power in joy. There’s power in choosing joy and choosing peace. And not allowing anyone to take that from you Is the real strength, the real growth.

Let me know, written from the uncertainty of new love and dating. When things just feel so right but you’re not sure if it’s going to go anywhere and where you stand or the other person for that matter. Features Trans artist, Lyteral Who has some impressive work already out there and who is a personal friend.

What is next for you?

I miss performing and singing live with a band. I have done the majority of my performances on zoom and in the comfort of my home or in a home-like setting. I hope to be able to travel when possible and sing my music live for those who know and like my music and those who may not have had the opportunity to hear me yet. I am also currently writing to new tracks with a few producers and looking forward to the direction of the next projects.
