Beauty and Brains Happy Hour

The Beauty and Brains Challenge Happy Hour, hosted by Darius Slaughter, author of “Hostile: An Urban Tragedy”, will be held at Oliver + Twist Bar in Houston, TX Saturday, January 23 from 4pm to 7pm. The event is in an effort to fight against illiteracy.

The Beauty and Brains Happy Hour was created to pull educated, talented, and accomplished females from various walks of life together to stand up and help fight illiteracy.  As we fight to save future generations from the current lack of education and glorification of self-destructive and bad behavior, Darius wants to honor and exalt the women who personify hard work and elevation. Thus, the Beauty and Brains Happy Hour is both a celebration of strong, educated women as well as a battle cry for the masses to stand up and participate in the fight against illiteracy.

There will be live submission tapings, free giveaways, and more.

Darius initially launched the Beauty and Brains Challenge on social media. In this ongoing challenge, he aimed specifically at women, and iterated the fact that many people in America cannot read. As part of the challenge, he had the participants read out loud, post, and tag him.

ABOUT DARIUS SLAUGHTER:

A National Merit Scholar in journalism, Slaughter was challenged by his life of juggling college, two jobs, and parental issues. HOSTILE is the true account of overcoming life’s adversity in relationships, loss, and tragedy. Slaughter’s talents, brains, and will to survive eventually led him to success and opportunity. However, “the path less traveled” came at a price and caused him to gamble with his life in his quest for Money, Power, and Respect. Far from the fairy tale ride painted by some who seek to glorify the streets, readers are warned to beware of the reality and emotions of his journey. Situations become supremely personal and intimate as Slaughter bares his soul to the world.

Darius Slaughter is a Houston, TX native who started writing while he was in elementary school. At an early age, he won short story contests and poetry contests. When he was in high school, he won state in journalism. Some of his favorite authors are Malcolm X and Isaac Asimov. Writing has always been his passion and was something that came naturally to him.

ABOUT HOSTILE: AN URBAN TRAGEDY:

Hostile: An Urban Tragedy is the true account of his internal struggles, triumphs, failure, and pain echoed in the ultimate way as he played the “game of life.” Money, power, and respect were at the forefront as he struggled to exist between the line society designated as legal and his more lucrative, yet high-risk illegal actions. He hopes that his experiences, tragedies, and

losses will help to open the eyes of those who take this journey with him and deter them from unsavory life choices.
