April Fore: Mother Turned Author Brings Awareness to Turner Syndrome (Interview)

April Fore has endured loss and turned that test of faith into a tremendous testimony. In 2014 at a routine 9-week prenatal screening, April received devastating news. Her child had a cystic hygroma on its neck. This was an indicator that there were some chromosomal abnormalities. After taking a karyotype test and waiting a very long two weeks, it was determined that her daughter had Turner Syndrome. A few weeks later, her daughter EmmaGrace went to heaven to be with the Lord.

She found that writing the series was both cathartic and therapeutic when dealing with the loss of EmmaGrace.

What inspired you to write “The Adventures of E.G.G?”

April: In 2014, at a routine 9-week prenatal screening, I received devastating news. My child had a cystic hygroma on her neck. This was an indicator that there were some chromosomal abnormalities. After taking a karyotype test and waiting a very long two weeks, it was determined that my daughter had Turner Syndrome. A few weeks later, my daughter EmmaGrace went to heaven to be with the Lord. A class assignment planted a seed in me to write The Adventures of E. G. G. (Emma Grace Godwins) to honor her memory.

What can readers take away from your book?

April: The takeaway would be its beauty in being uniquely different. I also wanted to bring some normalcy to a child who may spend a lot of time visiting doctors.

What is Turner Syndrome?

April: Turner is the second most common genetic disorder. It is estimated that the disorder affects 1 in 2,000 females; 1,000 new baby girls are born with the syndrome annually.  The actual percentage may be higher because of the wide range of symptoms and each individual affected by Turner Syndrome does not experience the same effects, which causes many to go undiagnosed. Turner syndrome is a rare chromosomal disorder that affects females.

What steps did you take to heal/cope?

April: I moved back to my hometown in South Carolina, I surrounded myself with family, I made a list of goals I wanted to achieve, and made sure I checked everything off that list. I told myself I was going to become a better person; someone EmmaGrace would have been proud of. Oh, and I pray a lot.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

April: Actually no. I started the first book as a class assignment, and it just grew into a series.

Do you have other books?

April: I have two books published and about three more titles to come. I plan to continue with the series as long as God sees fit.

Do you hear from your readers much? If so, what do they say?

April: I really do! Some have used my book for book reports, weekly reading assignments, and they always send me clips of them reading it. I love when I get the pictures and videos.

What’s up next for you?

April: There will be an EGG plush doll coming soon, and I’m so excited! And of course more books!

Where can everyone purchase a copy of your book?

April: Amazon.com and via my website: http://theeggstories.com
