In a surprising turn of events, President Joe Biden announced that he is ending his re-election bid in the 2024 Presidential race. With the intention of serving out the remainder of his term, he immediately endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as nominee.

A letter posted on Biden’s X account read, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

The Immediate Impact

President Biden’s decision to drop out of the presidential race has upended an already tumultuous contest. The past month has been nothing short of chaotic: Biden’s poor performance in the June 27 debate led many Democrats to push for his withdrawal.

On July 13, the nation was stunned by an assassination attempt on former President Trump. And Trump announced last week that he has chosen hardline Republican Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate.

Kamala Harris’s Road to Nomination

Vice President Kamala Harris has now taken center stage. Upon learning of Biden’s decision, Harris expressed her gratitude, stating she is “honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination.” Should Harris clinch the nomination, potential running mates could include Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper.

Republican Reactions

On the other side of the aisle, Republicans have their reactions in response to the news. Here are a few of the reactions

Senator J.D. Vance: “If Joe Biden ends his reelection campaign, how can he justify remaining President? Not running for reelection would be a clear admission that President Trump was right all along about Biden not being mentally fit enough to serve as Commander-in-Chief. There is no middle ground.”

Donald Trump Jr.: “Kamala Harris owns the entire leftwing policy record of Joe Biden. The only difference is that she is even more liberal and less competent than Joe, which is really saying something. She was put in charge of the border and we saw the worst invasion of illegals in our history!!!”

House Speaker Mike Johnson: “The party’s prospects are no better now with Vice President Kamala Harris, who co-owns the disastrous policy failures of the Biden Administration. As second in command and a completely inept border czar, Harris has been a gleeful accomplice — not only in the destruction of American sovereignty, security, and prosperity, but also in the largest political coverup in U.S. history.”

As the nation grapples with the monumental news, one thing is certain: the 2024 Presidential election has just become one of the most unpredictable contests in recent history.
